Home Services Artificial Grass Lawns

A natural lawn in Lexington is a year-round argument with the weather. Fescue browns out under August heat. The clay underneath holds water, so the low corner stays soggy into May. Mature trees shade half the yard, and grass never fills in properly beneath them.

An artificial grass lawn ends that. Installed properly, it stays even and green through drought, frost and everything between, with no mowing, no irrigation and no seasonal chemical programme.

What a full lawn installation involves

We excavate three to four inches of existing sod and soil and haul it away. Living grass left underneath will decompose and settle, which is what causes the lumpy, wavy look you see on cut-price installations after two seasons.

Then we build the base: graded aggregate, compacted in lifts, sloped to move water where it should go. On Lexington's clay this is where the job is won or lost. Clay does not absorb water at any useful rate, so the base has to carry it away rather than assuming the ground below will take it.

The turf is then rolled, cut to the yard's actual shape, seamed, anchored at the perimeter, and infilled. A power broom stands the blades up and works the infill down between them. Most residential lawns are complete in one to two days.

Choosing the right turf for a lawn

Lawn turf is a different specification from pet turf or putting green turf. For a residential lawn we generally look at:

  • Pile height of around 1.5 to 1.75 inches. Shorter looks sparse across a wide area; taller lays over and looks flat.
  • Face weight in the 60–80 oz range for a lawn that gets normal family use.
  • Blade shape. A W-blade or S-blade resists matting far better than a flat blade, which matters where people actually walk.
  • Colour blend. Two greens plus a tan thatch layer. Single-tone turf is the fastest way to make a lawn look fake from the street.

We bring samples to the estimate so you can see them in your own light rather than under showroom lighting.

Will it look real?

Good turf installed well is not obvious from the sidewalk. Three things give away a bad installation: uniform single-tone colour, visible seams, and a perimeter that does not sit flush with the beds and hardscape. All three are avoidable, and all three are down to product choice and installation care rather than luck.

What it costs

Most full-lawn projects in Lexington run $7 to $14 per square foot installed. A 500 square foot back yard typically lands between $4,000 and $7,000; an 800 square foot front yard between $5,600 and $10,400. Full pricing breakdown here.

Living with it

Rinse occasionally to keep dust down. Rake or blow leaves off in autumn the same way you would a patio. Cross-brush high-traffic paths once or twice a year to keep the blades upright. That is genuinely the whole maintenance programme.

Answers

Common questions

Does artificial grass look fake?
Not when the product and installation are right. The tells are single-tone colour, visible seams and edges that don't sit flush. Quality turf uses multiple green tones with a tan thatch layer underneath, and a careful installer hides seams entirely.
Can I put artificial grass over my existing lawn?
No, and any installer offering to is cutting a corner that will cost you. Living sod decomposes underneath and the surface settles unevenly within two seasons. Existing grass has to come out.
How long does a lawn installation take?
Most residential lawns take one to two days. Larger properties or yards with difficult access can run to three.
Does it drain in heavy rain?
Yes, if the base is built for it. The turf backing drains at over 30 inches per hour, but Lexington's clay soil doesn't absorb water, so the graded aggregate base underneath has to carry it away.
Will it burn my feet in summer?
It runs warmer than natural grass in direct sun, similar to a wooden deck. Shaded areas stay comfortable. Cooling-technology turf reduces surface temperature noticeably, and a quick rinse cools any turf within seconds.
